The Mellow parenting Programme has been the subject of a number of evaluations and has been shown to be effective in engaging hard to reach families. One year follow-up has shown lasting gains in maternal well-being, parent-child interaction, child behaviour and children’s language and non-verbal abilities. -The programme places an emphasis on parental engagement and empowerment. There is a personal group for parents while children are supported in a childrens group, followed by a shared lunch for children, parents and staff. The afternoon sessions are split into a shared activity session for parents and children designed to promote understanding of development and .mutual enjoyment, and a further adult session to analyse individual video tapes of family interaction. The families are offered homework tasks and opportunities to practise new skills and workshops to discuss and extend their repertoire of management techniques.

The aim of the quantitative part of the research is to collate a number of pieces of data. The quantitative report will also evaluate the nature of drug use and drug services in Cumbria when compared to other shire counties (e.g. Staffordshire, Lincolnshire, Devon, Leicestershire). By talking to young individuals who have previously accessed services, or who are in high risk groups for accessing services in the future (e.g. young people involved in the criminal justice system; those excluded from school; those who have easy access to drugs) the researchers and the DAAT will be able to elucidate reasons for not accessing services, and the report will then recommend possible changes that could be implemented to improve. In summary, both reports are aimed at improving young peoples services in the Cumbria area.
